Photojournalism Class Rubrics and Assignment Briefs

A local university asked me to lead a photojournalism class for their journalism students this past fall. The below PDFs all represent assignments I made for the class. In addition to the assignments covered in the briefs here, the class also included general news and photo illustration assignments but I did not make specific briefs for those class segments.

Each assignment brief includes a grading rubric. In the case of the earliest briefs, the rubric is quite basic, while the later briefs include a far more granular breakdown of grading criteria. The assignments, grading system and other factors did result in strong growth in the quality of work for a few students. Many other students produced photographs that were equally unmotivated from the beginning to the end of the class.

The class materials I used also include a lengthy syllabus that I modified from a friend’s document, numerous presentations, and a host of custom grading spreadsheets. I may put some of those documents online as well at a later date.
