Work in Progress: Tianhe Villages

A row of partially-demolished apartment buildings line a lake in Tianhe District, Guangzhou, China

After two years based in Guangzhou, I've recently begun assembling a few collections of photos based around personal projects I've been photographing. Like most photographers, my assigned work is usually a sort of visual problem solving; the client needs images to illustrate a particular item, idea or occasion and I work to find visual solutions with a particular end result in mind.

With much of the stuff I photograph on my own time, the process is far more compulsive; I still want to end up with interesting images at the end but the nature of those images, the process to make them, and time frame involved tends to be a bit murky.

With that said, here's the first installment: Photographs around old villages of Tianhe District, Guangzhou. All these places are either changing rapidly, gone, or on the brink of complete removal, which has the strange benefit of removing any opportunity to go back and make better images than what I already have.

Botanical Photos in the book "Sarraceniaceae of North America"

Cover of the book

Redfern Natural History recently licensed a few of my Darlingtonia californica photographs for use in the book Sarraceniaceae of North America, including the cover photo. Redfern has used a few of my botanical photos in earlier works but this is the first time they have put one on the cover of one of their books.

Check it out on the Redfern Natural History website: Sarraceniaceae of North America by Stewart McPherson and Donald Schnell.

If you'd like to see more Darlingtonia images, I've put together a gallery of Darlingtonia californica photos made over the past few years.

List of Hong Kong Photography Shops and Other Professional Photo Resources

A woman rides the Hong Kong Metro subway system in south China

Hong Kong is a city where it seems everyone is constantly selling, shopping, or on the way to sell or shop; yet with all that commerce, finding the right place to buy many specialty items in the city - professional photography equipment, for instance - is surprisingly challenging. Many shops have poor online presences or are just plain obscure.

In an effort to make some of the better Hong Kong photo equipment businesses a bit easier to locate (and to avoid regurgitating this sort of information in emails), here is a list of the places where I have done business, shopped or otherwise find value in Hong Kong:

Pictures from an Exhibition - "Macau: Work in Progress" Event Video

So this is a video not pictures and the event was a book launch not an exhibition but still, I think I can justify the title: The event did rather resemble an exhibition (with loads of printed photographs lining the walls) and this video is composed primarily of individual still photos sewn together...

On December 6th, David Hartung officially launched his book "Macau: Work in Progress" at the Macau Military Club. I've had the honor and privilege of hanging about Macau while David made many of the images in his book, which has made it all the more exciting to see the work printed in this monograph of sorts.

I'm terrible at socializing at this sort of social occasion so decided to make a time-lapse video of the book launch instead (it was that or drink all the wine). Three cameras, a couple bags of lenses, 20+ CF cards and 270GB of raw data, and here are the results:

Tozé Soares was kind enough to mention my video about David Hartung's book "Macau: Work in Progress" in his Macau Daily Times column. If you'd like to take a look, you can download the full edition of the newspaper from the Times' website (or get it here if that link goes stale).

Making of the Photo Book "Macau: Work in Progress"

David Hartung invited me to visit his printer for the first day printing his photo book "Macau: Work in Progress" last month in Hong Kong. I first came to Asia to work with David at Destination Macau magazine where he photographed most of the material for this book so I knew that the images would be interesting. What I didn't fully anticipate was how visually compelling the factory itself would be - for video.

Macau Portrait Photography - Tapestry in Sound Jazz Band Promo for Cafe Deco

Tapestry in Sound jazz band portrait on the pool table at Cafe Deco Macau

The Tapestry in Sound jazz band exists as something of an anomaly amongst the usual imported acts performing in new Macau's casinos, bars and other performance venus; it's a thoroughly local group featuring a handful of Macau's best young jazz musicians.

Cafe Deco Macau asked me to stop by and make a couple photos of the band last month for their promotions.

Foshan Product Photography - Furniture Catalog Photos Fresh from the Factory

Lamp detail photographed for a catalog in Foshan, China

Foshan furniture photography is rather popular for me at the moment; the city is essentially a suburb of Guangzhou, where I'm based, and it's status as a world manufacturing hub for sofas, chairs, and other furnishings draws a global audience of buyers keen to make their fortunes exporting from China.

Large furniture are a bit tricky to transport off-site for photography so I end up traveling to Foshan with a van full of photo equipment to set up a portable studio in factory showrooms. Moving bulky arm chairs on and off a white background all day is definitely hard work but is much easier than moving a container load of furnishings to an off-site studio.
